Basic Level Blocking
I have begun thinking about the basic level layouts for a few of the levels. I have a pretty good idea about what the levels look like, but I haven't corporealised all these ideas yet.
Of the levels, I have physical ideas for the first three and the last level. (That is The Approach, The Surface, Cave Entrance, and ???)
The first and last levels are both entirely void apart from enemies or other objects. The Surface and Cave Entrance are both fairly simple conceptually, so I quickly drafted one scene from each. I also designed some of the alien objects that can be destroyed and some random point values for them.
Level 2: The Surface
Level 3: Cave Entrance
As you may be able to read in the first image, the three objects I designed are:
- Satellite Dish - 2000Pts
- Radio Tower - 1000Pts
- Buildings - 500Pts
These objects will award the player points for being destroyed, and kill the player if the touch them. They can be destroyed with either bullets or bombs, but bullets do less damage and will therefore be less effective. Some objects will also be positioned in a way that makes them impossible to hit with bullets, forcing the player to time their bombs to fall into valleys or gaps.
In any case, these are what I have designed so far. Still ruminating on the Vector Drawing idea. I think that it may be too much work for too little pay-off. That is to say: I can just draw sprites that look like Vector Images and you wouldn't be able to tell whether they were single sprites or drawn from lines.
I was also questioning the performance hit that drawing all those lines would have, btu I doubt the game would notice any significant slowdown on most systems. (Still, I think large sprites would be more efficient that many lines.)
The other consideration I have had was to the number of stages in each level. I think it would be best if I focused on getting one stage in each level first, and then add extra levels if I have time. This could also be something I continue in the future.
Anyway, thanks for reading. Hopefully I'll get some new build out sometime soon. I think either The Surface or The Approach is most likely to see next. Perhaps a Title Screen if I get that far.
